MUMBAI: Close to 9,000 engineering aspirants have been declared ineligible by the directorate of technical education (DTE) after the provisional merit list was out on Saturday. But the DTE has allowed students to file their grievances by 5pm on Tuesday. A final merit list will be put up on July 9.

Of the 1.06 lakh students who registered for the centralized admission process (CAP) in engineering institutes in Maharashtra, 8,809 aspirants from both the open and reserved categories, were declared not eligible.

"There are several students who score below the eligibility criteria of 50% (for open category) and still apply. Sometimes, the state government relaxes the eligibility criteria by 5%, so students just ensure that their application is recorded. Some students fail to submit eligible documents for their claims and are disqualified," said an official from the DTE.

"Though the number is high, it might come down in the final merit list that will be put up on Wednesday. It has nothing to do with the percentile score of students," added the official from the DTE.
